Hi all,
I would like to introduce Kyra Schroeder who is visiting me for the next month from Boston College in the US. Kyra is a geochemist and metamorphic petrologist interested in fine scale chemical change recorded in the crystal record. She is here to work on Fe, Zn and Cu isotopes in metamorphic rocks from the Dora-Maira massif in the Alps.
She is going to be giving a short talk at 1300 on Monday 11th in 1.58 as part of the CELTIC lab meeting. Please feel free to swing by if you are interested.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
Please remember we will have the lab lunch next Monday at 2pm in 1.58. I will move the lab meeting from Tuesday morning to 1pm Monday to give us an hour before the lunch to chat lab.
For those that fancy we will drift off to the pen and wig after lunch.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi All,
Chemistry has had to evacuate a lab on the ground floor today as there is problem with their extraction. As such they are keen for Estates to get onto the South Central roof asap and this will put the fume hoods and extracting instruments out of use for one day in the CELTIC labs, 2.10, 2.35, 1.31, 2.17 and 2.19.
I've looked at the booking sheet for the CELTIC labs, and Tuesday 5th November looks to be a suitable day to put the extraction out of use and close the labs (currently no booking for instruments or clean labs).
Please could you let me know asap if this will cause you any problems.
Many thanks,
Lindsey

Hi everyone,
The lab has been checked and the gas is gone now. Estates have agreed to keep the job open so we can notify them if it comes back.
The lab is open now (I'm having lunch now so if you beat me to it, feel free to remove the "No entry" signs) but if at any point there is another smell coming from the vents, please let me or Lindsey know and evacuate right away.
Many thanks,
Sofiya

Hi everyone,
There is a strong chemical smell coming from the air supply vents. Estates have been informed it's urgent and will hopefully make their way quickly to us to check what it is but until we know it's safe, the lab has been closed for today. There are "No Entry" signs posted on the door, please wait until we notify you it's safe to enter.
Thank you for understanding and I'm very sorry for the inconvenience!
Many thanks,
Sofiya

Hi All,
A reminder that all extraction in South Central Zone which includes laminar flow hoods, fume hoods and instrument extraction will be out of use tomorrow for one hour, WEDNESDAY 30.10.2024 0800-0900 for essential roof work to take place (inspection of one of our fume hoods).
This zone includes the CELTIC facility, labs 2.35, 1.31 and 2.10.
Please ensure that nothing is extracting to the roof during this period.
Thanks,
Lindsey

Dear all,
Me, Sophie and Morten are all on leave next week and Marc is currently off sick. This means there is very little support for CELTIC until we are all back at work on the 4th Nov. Sofiya is around and should be the first point of contact if you have an issue but please be aware that if Sofiya cant sort it things will just need to wait until the 4th.
Instrument wise:
- The Neoma is down with an issue with the plasma. Engineers will remote in next week so please do not touch it.
- The Nu is down and we are awaiting financial approval for the repair.
- The Triton has some very low level samples loaded in the source currently and will need the 1013 amplifiers installed to measure the remaining. This means nobody is to use the Triton until I return.
- 213 laser is still down awaiting repair by ESI
- The iCAP solution and OES are operational :)
Our new 193 laser will arrive the first week of Nov and hopefully that will be up and running as soon as the premix gas arrives.
Any issues let me know.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
There are new risk assessments for the new Nd TODGA chemistry, operation of the Triton and Neoma. If you are doing Nd chemistry, using the Triton or Neoma please go and read these and update the training record. New columns have been added to the training record for these procedures.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi everyone,
Hope everyone is doing alright!
Apologies for the confusion yesterday, I came a bit late and missed the original question. I've just spoken to Lindsey about the training log, to clear any confusion old training dates will be erased since we have no way of checking in the past when people were trained. Going forward, when you are trained on a new process, the only date you fill in is the day you read the risk assessment. Your trainer will date when you have been trained and signed off.
Just to reiterate and make sure no one panics - I will delete the old training dates since it's they're inaccurate. Since it's a new log and new system, it's fine to stay blank. When you get trained in the future, you date when you read the RA and your trainer dates when you were trained, so you only put one date.
Let me know if you have any questions! Sorry I didn't say this yesterday!
Many thanks,
Sofiya
