Dear all,
Following the incident with the Element 2 and the water ingress to the duct work I need to make you aware of the risk associated with water leaks and discharge of high voltage (HV) from the instruments. The Triton, Elements, Neoma and Nu Plasma 2 all use direct current (DC) HV supplies to their electronics, lenses and magnets. There is a risk that this HV will discharge if the supplies are submerged. Given that leaks are common in CELTIC there is an inherent risk of electrocution if you were to make contact with a puddle of water that was also conducting from the HV of the instrument.
As such, if you come to the lab and find a puddle of water on the floor near one of the mass specs you must inform me immediately. Ensure that other lab users are aware until I arrive and can isolate the HV and make it safe.
Cheers,
Edward

Good morning,
In preparation for the safety audit which is occurring on Wednesday please take some time today and tomorrow to ensure the lab is clean and tidy. This includes gathering all your stuff from the hoods/workbenches and storing them in your drawers (remember no liquids are to be stored in your drawers - these must be dried down first).
I will be doing a sweep of the lab tomorrow and tidying away any mess so its best to deal with your stuff before I do :)
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
We will meet at Tuesday at 11am in 1.58 main building for the next lab meeting.
This week Marc will present an overview of the double spike technique used to correct bias in isotope ratio measurements. It’s set to be a packed room so please ensure you arrive early to get a prime seat.
Cheers,
Edward

Dear all,
In line with new advice from safety we must ensure that we are compliment with respect to lab users and cardiac pacemakers.
Because several of our mass specs (Triton, Elements, Neoma and Nu Plasma) use a large magnet there is a risk to people fitted with a pacemaker, as this magnetic field can interfere with them.
If you have a pacemaker fitted please inform me ASAP so I can advise further.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
The safety audit is occurring next Wednesday and as part of this we must show the auditor evidence of training and risk assessment compliance. I need to ensure the training record is up to date.
Please can everyone go now and…
1) Open the training record (Training Record.xlsx<https://cf.sharepoint.com/:x:/r/teams/CELTIC/Shared%20Documents/General/Ind…>)
2) Check that the risk assessment and training date for each of the procedures that you use is up to date. As a reminder all training and reading of the risk assessments must be refreshed every 3 years unless the procedure contains HF acid which require reviewing annually.
If there are any questions please let me know ASAP.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi everyone,
Hope everyone has nice weekend plans ahead!
There is a new training log, every procedure now has 2 dates - one which you as the user date the day you read the RA linked to the process, and another which is dated by the person who has trained you. We can go into detail about this during the next lab meeting, if anyone has any questions in the meantime don't hesitate to ask!
There is now an LEV log for the microwave system in 1.21. The hood next to it, 315A, has been put as "out of use" and 315B (the hood with the hose from the microwave) is only for the microwave. Absolutely no chemistry is allowed up in 1.21, not only has it not been cleaned in a very long time, therefore it's not clean enough to do chemistry, but 315B also is not safe to use. The extraction does not hold if the sash is open so it's not safe to use (and will alarm very loudly and annoyingly, if you open it). If you have any questions, drop me an email!
Thanks everyone!

The university welcomes correspondence in Welsh or English. Corresponding in Welsh will not lead to any delay.
Hi all,
We will hold a lab lunch for all members of CELTIC on Monday 11th November between 14-16:00 in 1.58 main building. Lunch will be provided! We can take this opportunity to get to know our colleagues a bit better in an informal setting. We will likely slope off to the pub when we are done for those that wish to join.
Cheers,
Edward
