Hi Everyone,
We currently have no heating in both clean labs and the Neoma instrument room and it's very cold. Estates are aware and are looking to resolve the issue asap. Ed is considering putting in some portable heaters, but in the meantime, please do not start any clean lab chemistry until it warms up again
I'll let you know when this is resolved.
Cheers,
Lindsey

Hi All,
We been notified today that Safety have been looking at the LEV 2 user log document again and HSE guidelines (HSG258) and think the current requirement to complete the log for each individual use of the LEV is too much. They are now happy for a single daily check recorded in the user log, and will produce a new user log that would just include three columns - the date, adding a tick to say visual and audio checks were completed, and adding some initials.
Each user would just need to check the log just to ensure the daily check has been formally completed - if it hasn't, then it can be done at that point (the first user that day gets to do it).
Safety will amend the LEV 2 user form and share it with us soon, but we can continue to use the original version we already have in place and the only change will be moving to recording daily LEV checks instead of needing to record the checks each time the LEV is used by a different person.
Sounds sensible.
Please alert all your lab users to this change.
Have a good weekend!

Hi all,
There is a new bottle of 1.5ltr HCl in the general clean lab which Sophie has just placed under the Felcon hood. Her and Lizan are going to restart the stills now but please be aware that there will be no more conc HCl ready until Monday.
Please also be aware that Sofiya is currently on leave until next week so don’t disturb her until she is back :)
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
Just as a reminder we will meet for our lab meeting tomorrow at 11am but this week we will be in large chemistry lecture theatre 1.123.
We will have a talk to start from Loren Tessier who is visiting Morten from GET in Toulouse. The title of her talk will be Experimental determination of ‘stable’ uranium isotope fractionations during the early diagenesis of ferruginous sediments.'
Please invite any colleagues who may be interested in U isotopes and or ferruginous sediments.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
Just to let you know that we have been awarded the LEAF bronze award. Please congratulate Sofiya on her huge effort with this! She has lead on this for us and it’s not been particularly easy in a lab as complex as ours!
Thanks Sofiya!

Subject: EARTH LEAF awards
Hello everyone
I’m pleased to announce that our 3D Lab, CELTIC Lab and SEM lab have all been awarded bronze LEAF accreditation. Congratulations to Lizan, Duncan, Sofiya, Edward and Sophie for this achievement and to Imane for her efforts leading on this work to help improve the sustainability and efficiency of our laboratories. Our Palaeo, Image and Geochemistry labs have also been submitted for audit and we are confident of more positive news shortly 😊.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF), this is a certification scheme designed to enable staff and students to understand and improve the sustainability and efficiency of their laboratory areas. Many funding bodies, including UKRI, are moving towards including environmental criteria in funding calls and LEAF accreditation will contribute towards satisfying this requirement. Technical teams across all Schools are working to ensure that all labs within Cardiff University reach LEAF bronze accreditation by summer 2025.
For more info on the framework, https://www.ucl.ac.uk/sustainable/take-action/staff-action/leaf-laboratory-…<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ucl.a…>
Congratulations again!
Best wishes; Dymuniadau gorau
Jenny

Hi all,
Today is finally the day you have all been waiting for… the new HF sensors have arrived!
The contractor will install them this afternoon so if you are working in the clean labs today there might be 30 mins of disruption while they are fitted and tested.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi everyone,
There's been a few questions about HCL - I put on a round of single distilled HCL this morning so it will be ready on Monday. Until then, there is either none left or very very little in the bottle. Please keep that in mind when planning your chemistry. Apologies for the trouble and delay.
The lab meeting next week will be in lecture room 1.123 (where the talk from Jenny was yesterday) so we can use the nice big screen. From 11am again, Tuesday the 4th, room 1.123 over on chemistry's side.
Many thanks,
Sofiya
