Hi everyone,
As you may be aware, following the recent fire alarm we discovered the HF sensors, though still working when the engineer tested and calibrated them last Thursday, are coming to the end of their life. As we can not have complete confidence in them, all HF work must stop until the sensors are replaced in the new year. The CELTIC clean labs will still be open for non-HF chemistry.
I will let you know when we expect the sensors to be replaced once I have more info from the contractor/Estates.
In the interim, the faulty HF sensors are likely to trigger the local gas alarm. Please treat any alarm as a real alarm and immediately vacate the labs. Please ensure everyone working within the CELTIC facility leaves the lab and the 'do not enter' sign is posted on the outer door.
Please then contact Edward or myself to check the gas detection system, reset it, and let you know it is safe to re-enter.
Thank you for your understanding.

Hi all,
Just to let you know the ratchet that locks the sash on hood 2 in the clean lab is broken. I have done a temporary repair while the new part arrives but for the moment please don’t try and adjust the sash high - it must remain in its current position.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
We have checked the lab and it appears to be a fault with one of the gas alarm sensors. We have reset the system and you are all okay to use the lab as normal.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
Earlier this evening a one of the gas alarms in the lab activated and tripped the building fire alarm. Lindsey and I need to check the cause of this and reset the AHU tomorrow morning before people can enter the lab. Please do not enter the lab until you get the all clear email from me or Lindsey.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
One thing I forgot to mention at the lab meeting is that estates have requested a second roof shutdown for week commencing 6th January 2025. This would mean all extraction would be down (chemistry rooms and mass specs) for the week effectively meaning a total lab shutdown.
Please can people reply to me ASAP if they see this being an issue. I need to let estates know quickly if they can go ahead with this.
Note this is in addition to the roof shutdown happening 9th, 10th and 11th December.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
See below a request from estates who need to out a full roof shutdown on for 9th 10th 11th Dec. I see at the moment that Emily and Gwen are booked in to do chemistry. Can this schedule be altered? MDI and chemistry are always very helpful with respect to roof shutdowns when we need them…
Cheers,
Edward

Hi Tony,
I need to confirm that this work can go ahead as planned ASAP or will run the risk of losing the slot with the contractors concerned.Everyone except for the Celtic Lab has indicated that they are happy to proceed. Hi all,
Thanks to those that attended the lab meeting the other day. Just make crystal clear what was said about lab cleaning moving forward:
- All those on research only contracts, postgraduate students and professional services staff employed on a project are required to participate in the lab cleaning.
- The rota will be run in 3 month blocks and Sofiya will oversee this. The rota is on the teams channel and can be accessed here<https://cf.sharepoint.com/:x:/r/teams/CELTIC/Shared%20Documents/General/Cel…>.
- You are responsible to sign up to 2/3 cleaning sessions per 3 month block.
- The lab should be cleaned at 2.30pm every other Friday. If you cannot make that time you must email Sofiya in advance and arrange to clean at an alternative day/time.
- Sofiya will check peoples attendance for the cleaning. She will also be on hand to show new users how to clean the lab. If you are in any confusion about how to clean the lab you can refer to the handy guide here<https://cf.sharepoint.com/:w:/r/teams/CELTIC/Shared%20Documents/General/Lab…>.
Cheers,
Edward

Dear all,
I’ve been asked to remind you that when working in the fume hoods in the cleans labs you must…
1) Ensure that no objects are placed within the “critical working zone”. This zone of criticality is apparently the front 100mm of the fume hood.
2) Work with the sash as low as practically possible.
Cheers,
Edward
