Hi all,
The time for farewell has come, sadly.
You probably know that the 31st of January will be my last day in EARTH. I would like to enjoy some afterwork drinks in the Pen & Wig, one last time, with all of you. I will be there on the 31st from 5pm onwards, come join me if you can! 😃
Feel free to pass the invitation along, because the more, the merrier!
Many things have changed since the 1st time I set foot in the department back in 2018 …. But the P&W persists (for good or for bad). Of course, it is the only place where farewell drinks could take part.
I will be in Cardiff until mid Feb, then I will fly out to warmer, more humid, places (i.e., Tallahassee) to continue my dream career of firing lasers at corals and such. I am going to miss Cardiff (and the UK) a lot, but I am excited for the sunshine!
Working with all of you has been amazing. I have learnt a lot about how to be a good scientist, a good mentor, and a good colleague, and that is thanks to you all. I will miss you, and I hope we get to see each other again soon.

Dear all,
Happy new year and welcome back!
Im sure some of us have made some brilliant new years resolutions and I hope they are going well for you so far. As a group I think our collective resolution should be to be better at cleaning the lab :)
Cleaning the lab should be done every other Friday at 3pm. Four people are always scheduled to clean and it should take an hour to complete. I’ve attached the cleaning rota here. It can also be found on teams. Please take this and add it to your calendars. If you need to swap then please speak to your peers and arrange that. We will be closely monitoring who actually turns up for cleaning from now on as historically attendance has been very poor.
Cheers,
Edward

Dear all,
I missed the opportunity to say goodbye to all of you before going back to Barcelona. It has been two fantastic years in Cardiff and you´ve been a good part of it. To be fair I´ll be back in a couple months for some more analysis, so it´s a see you soon this time. I hope to catch up then.
My Cardiff email is getting extinguished soon, so please do get in contact via roger.alcantara.fors(a)gmail.com or roger.alcantara(a)uab.cat
Enjoy the break!
All the best,
Roger

Dear all,
Looking at the booking sheet I can see that there is nobody booked in to use the lab this week. In which case I will close the lab on Wednesday afternoon and prepare some of the instruments for festive hibernation period. If anybody desperately needs to use the lab on Thursday and Friday of this week then please reply to this email ASAP and let me know. Otherwise the lab will be closed from 3pm on Wednesday 20th Dec and reopen on Wednesday 3rd Jan 2024.
Remember to use the new booking sheet for the new year…

Dear all,
Firstly, thanks to those that turned up to clean the labs yesterday. It's in much better shape now thanks to your team effort :)
Secondly, there is a new booking sheet for the new year as the old one was getting too cluttered and glitchy. There are tabs along the bottom for the chemistry rooms and instruments. For the chemistry rooms please include your name, the procedure and name of HF buddy and responder if doing HF work. For the instruments your name(s) and procedure is all thats required. I’ve pinned the booking sheet to the top of the teams channel and the link is here (Lab booking 2024 - .xlsx<https://cf.sharepoint.com/:x:/r/teams/CELTIC/Shared%20Documents/General/Lab…>). Please don't book beyond the red line.
Thirdly, we will have a lab meeting on Monday 8th at 10am in 1.58. I’ll organise some coffee and cake for this one seeing as it’s the first one back after the new year. I'd also like to include a 20 min tech/applications talk in these fortnightly meetings moving forward so if anyone would like to volunteer then let please me know.
Fourthly, there is a leak coming from the floor in the multi collector room. If you are in there and notice a puddle forming please use the mop and bucket to clean it up. When it gets too much I will give the order to abandon ship.
Fifthly, thanks all for your hard work and patience this year. I think you will all agree it’s not been straightforward and we have faced some issues in the lab but we have also welcomed lots of new people and instruments and made some exciting measurements. Let’s see if 2024 can be even better!
Merry Christmas and happy new year :)
Cheers,
Edward

Dear all,
The cleaning rota for the new year has been updated. Please follow the link and also below.
The instructions on how to clean the lab are also located in Teams. You should allow 1 hour each to clean the lab. Areas like the step over and ante rooms also need cleaning. If you cannot clean when you are down to please swap amongst yourself and update the spreadsheet. Attendance at cleaning has been appalling the last few months and currently the lab is filthy. Last week it was just myself, Lizan and Ana that showed up to clean. I would like as many people as possible to attend tomorrow afternoon at 2pm to clean. As a reminder it is your blanks and subsequently data that will suffer if the lab is not kept clean. The dycem mats should be cleaned daily. Bins should be emptied when they are full. Full bin bags should be taken up to the big wheelie bins outside and not just dumped by the lab door as I saw had happened this week.

See you all tomorrow,
Edward
