Hi everyone,
We are having a lab coat problem, particularly related to borrowing other people's lab coats. Currently, two users lab coats are missing, and two other users have had their sizes swapped without realizing.
Please remember - If you are going to be using someone's labcoat, put it back where you found it and most importantly - ask first. Please don't take other people's PPE without their consent or their knowledge as this causes delays in their schedule and pauses their work.
I had previously placed two visitor lab coats in two different sizes for people, those are gone now. I will wash a load of lab coats now, and I will place two new coats for lab visitors. Please use them if you are doing lab work for a short amount of time. If those are in use and you need to borrow someone's lab coat - ask them first please.
If you have any questions or anything you wanna raise on the topic, just drop me an email.
Thanks guys!
Sofiya

Hi everyone,
The plastic-free folders finally arrived today so it's time to start using the LEV Logs. I have organised the binders so the fume cupboard numbering is in order (starting from 1 continuing until 4). All you have to do as users is simply find the correct log you are using, and sign it. There should be information on the log itself for what each column means, what to know and what to sign, but I understand it can seem overwhelming at first - if you have any questions on them or if you want me to give you a rundown of the information, just let me know and we can either meet in the lab or in my office to go through it. Don't worry about asking questions.
I will place these in the lab this afternoon. So far there are 2 - the blue is for the general clean lab, and the pink is for the ultra clean lab. Please do not swap them around, the correct logs need to be in the correct rooms.
Remember - you sign the log when you are using the fume cupboard to confirm it is safe to use. If you are worried it's not, please let myself, Sophie, Ed or Lindsey know, and we will be able to have a look. You do not have to sign it every single time you use the same cupboard, just first thing in the day when you start your work. If you swap to a different cupboard, please sign it again.
I understand this will take some time to get used to, don't worry if you make a mistake or sign the wrong log, it will happen! If you let me know, then I will be able to correct it or we can correct the info together. Just remember to sign.
Thanks again guys, let me know if you have any questions!
Many thanks,
Sofiya
PS - Last week I placed 3 new golden (special) pens in the general clean lab. They are all gone now and only the not-working ones remain. Don't hoard the pens. Put them back in their spot once they've been used. They are good pens. Please don't lose them. People today have asked me to bring new ones even though less than a week ago I brought new ones. Just put them back in their spot so everyone can use them when you've done.

Hi Everyone,
Since both Ed and Sofiya are away for the rest of this week (and Ed until the 22nd), please get in touch with me if there are any problems. Also a reminder that the CELTIC chemistry labs are open between 8.30 and 16.30 Monday to Friday and should not be in use outside of these hours without prior arrangement with Ed (or with me while Ed is away).
Cheers,

Hi everyone,
Hope everyone's doing good, enjoying the much nicer weather today and feeling happy.
Since Ed isn't here, let's skip out on the lab meeting this week. He will be on holiday for the next meeting as well but we can discuss whether to meet then (that will be the 16th of July) and if anybody wants to bring up anything, Sophie and I can then relay it to Ed if we can't solve the problem on the spot!
Drop me an email if you would like to chat about something that can't wait until the next meeting or if anything is troubling you.
Many thanks,
Sofiya

Hi everyone,
I'm sure everyone (that was in the building today) is the aware of the power-cut, it was across the entire street not just our building, and the alarm that followed. Celtic is now open again, Lindsey, Sophie and I have checked it's safe. Tomorrow the instruments will be checked to make sure everything looks good there as well.
This is more for the future - the fire alarm that followed was because in another lab, when the power cut off their extraction did as well, and the gas alarm came on because the room was no longer safe. The alarm did not come on because of us and our work in Celtic, even though there were HF samples on hot plates. We believe it was because the hoods with said hot plates were lowered as much as possible, therefore when the extraction stopped for a few seconds there was still passive extraction, and no dangerous vapours were able to escape. Please keep this in mind for the future when you have finished working to lower your sash as much as possible. I understand it's very easy to leave it on the way you found it or the way it was while you were working but you never know what can happen, please when you've finished working just lower your sash.
If you have any questions, let me know!
Many thanks,
Sofiya

Hi all,
Just to let you know I will be away from Monday at a conference for a week and then on leave for 2 weeks. I’ll be back on the 22nd July.
Sofiya will be around for most of that time (bar a few days leave here and there) but is quite busy doing room inspections and PAT testing for the school. If you are planning any HF work then please check with Lindsey in advance as she will need to be onsite.
Finally, if you would like to join us tomorrow evening in the Pen and Wig to celebrate Sophie’s viva then we will be there from 5ish.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
A few of us were thinking that it might be fun to put together a sweepstake for the Tour de France and were wondering if you might be interested in joining (this is not an exclusive list so feel free to pass it to anyone). We’ve done a bit of online research and here is how it would work. Should be a bit of fun for the next 3 weeks.
We randomly choose a team of riders for each player (there are 22 teams of 8 riders competing).
We assign team points based on the performance of the individual riders on the team (scoring below). Given different teams have different goals for the tour, we have tried to balance the scoring away from teams that are only after the general classification
£5 to enter a team, that will be divvied out to the top 3 at the end (something like £55 for first, £35 for second, £20 for third).
If you’re interested, just let me know
Account details are:

Dear all,
The end of the university financial year is rapidly approaching. Because of the way our accounts work we need to ensure that everything we have ordered is delivered before the end of July. As such we will not be ordering anything for the lab after the 1st July. If there is anything that is required then speak now or forever hold thy peace.
Cheers,
Edward
