Dear Lab Users,
I hope everything is good with all
Dear Lab Users,
I hope everyone is doing well.
As some of you are aware, Celtic has finally finished installing its gas detection system. The chemistry laboratory will be opened again, but not before Celtic completely cleaned. Tomorrow is when we want to start cleaning. Please try your best to attend the cleaning.
Visit the ling below and enter your name in the Cleaning sheet on team for the time that is most convenient for you looking forward to seeing you all.

Hi everyone,
Estates annual servicing of the fume cupboards and air handling units will take place week commencing 25th September.
* Mon 25th to Wed 27th Sept: fume hoods in 1.21
* Thurs 28th to Fri 29th Sept: all extracted hoods in the chemistry rooms, -1.39 and -1.42A plus all extracted instruments in the Celtic facility, -1.34, and -1.42.
This won't massively impact us as the Celtic clean rooms and 1.21 will be out of use through the remainder of Sept anyway. However, all instruments in -1.34 and -1.42 must not be running on Thurs 28th and Fri 29th Sept due to extraction fan testing on the roof (all instrument booking have been blocked on the booking sheet), but they can of course remain on standby.
Cheers,
Lindsey

Dear all,
We now have a confirmed date for the install of the gas detection in the lab which will happen on the week commencing 18th September.
Once this is completed Lizan is going to organise the deep clean of the lab. She will communicate a date and time for this once the work has been completed. Please make every effort to come to the cleaning. If people don’t turn up then the lab will not reopen promptly.
We anticipate a full reopening of the clean labs on the 2nd October. Lindsey will confirm this at the time. Once the clean labs are back open then chemistry can resume. Note that only people that have been reinducted will be allowed access. Those that missed the reinduction session will need to find me and I will go through it with them.
Please note that I am on leave from this afternoon and won’t return until the 3rd October. In the interim Lindsey remains as the primary point of contact for CELTIC and is assisted by Lizan.
There is currently an electrical shutdown of the -1.34 side of the lab which will run until Monday morning. Ana and Sophie are managing the instruments on that side of the lab while this is ongoing.
Cheers,
Edward

Dear all,
As we move closer to the reopening of the chemistry rooms we can start to think about the necessary re-induction required before access can be granted. Please can we all meet at 9.30am next Thursday 24th in the Wallace lecture theatre so I can go though the induction and brief people on what they need to do in preparation for being able to access the chemistry rooms once more.
This is a mandatory meeting for all lab users. Everybody wanting to access the entire suite (instruments and chemistry rooms) must attend.
In addition those who have not undergone the mandatory COSHH, fume cabnet and laser safety (only those using the lasers need to do this one) courses must complete these. They can be found on learning central under “organisations” and are in the EARTH safety health and environment module. This is a requirement for all staff and students who use the labs. If you cannot access these then please let me know and I’ll sort it.
Cheers,
Edward

Dear all,
We have to move to a policy of wearing lab coats in both the instrument and chemistry rooms. We have installed lab coat bins in the entry room to the lab (where the step over is) and populated these with blue anti static lab coats in various sizes (picture attached). Please select a size and use the white paper labels on the top of the bins to write your name and inset it into the holder on the front of a bin of your choice. The policy will now be that anyone entering the lab complex to either go to the multi collector lab, iCAP/Element XR lab, prep room or TIMS/Element 2 lab must don a blue lab coat when they cross the stopover and put on their clogs. Those going straight to chemistry can follow the old procedure and put your clogs on as normal and then head to the ante room and don a white lab coat. The white lab coats should now only be worn in the chemistry rooms and the blue ones in the instrument rooms. There is no need to use the hood on the blue lab coats. I hope that makes sense to everyone. Any questions then just ask.
Cheers,
Edward
