Hi all,
Because of the summer vacation period we will pause the lab meetings for the rest of the summer. These will resume in September.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
Advanced warning that the lab will be closed on the 26th and 27th September for the annual LEV testing and servicing. During this time there will be no access to the clean labs or instrument rooms. All fume cabinets will need to be cleared to allow the engineers to test and service them.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all
Please do not use any of the sinks in the clean labs and multi collector room as the pump has failed again. Estates are working on it but will likely be next week before it can be fixed. When they do the repair we will need to close the clean labs for 1/2 day. When the part arrives estates will give me a days notice for the lab closure.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi all,
As we begin to see some semblance of summer now I need to remind you all about the mandatory PPE for working in the lab. It is a requirement to wear full length trousers and socks in the lab. Under no circumstances should you enter the lab (aka go beyond the step over) unless you are wearing full length trousers and socks. This means no shorts, skirts, 3/4 lengths, dresses, kilts, etc etc.
If you are working in the instrument rooms you must wear your blue lab coat and in the chemistry rooms opt for your white lab coat. For all liquid handling you must wear gloves, tyvek sleeve guards and safety glasses. Additional PPE for HF is detailed in the risk assessment for procedures using HF.
Cheers,
Edward

Hi everyone,
The pump in -1.42A has failed. We had a leak but it's fixed now and has been cleaned so the clean lab is still in-use. However, big alert - do not use the sinks! Estates has been notified and should hopefully fix it quickly but until then do not put anything down the sinks, do not use the DI water, and do not pour anything down the drains. I have put tape around it so you don't forget.
If you do need DI water, just let us know - there are options.
I will keep everyone posted, and alert everyone as soon as it's fixed.
Thanks!

Hi everyone,
Hope everyone is doing okay!
We know Ed is currently still away on holiday but Sophie and I will still be in our usual lab meeting room tomorrow at 11am. If anyone wants to join to discuss anything, feel free to come along.
Next lab meeting will be when Ed is back from holiday in another 2 weeks.
Cheers,
Sofiya

Hi everyone,
I thought it might be nice for us to do a CELTIC lab outing next week before Sophie Gangl leaves us at the end of the month. I was thinking laser tag while a few others suggested bowling. Fortunately, Superbowl UK offers both!! We could do one game of each for £12.00 per person, but if that's too much, we can book either laser tag for £6.00 per game or they have a special on Wednesdays for 2 bowling games for £7.50. Here's a link to their website if you'd like more information: https://www.superbowluk.co.uk/cardiff/<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.super…>
I was thinking we could meet there (it's near the train station at Stadium Plaza, Wood Str, Cardiff CF10 1LA) around 6:00 pm next Wednesday, 17 July.
If you're interested, please email me by Monday at the latest with your preference (laser tag, bowling, or both) and I'll send out a confirmation email before I book our spot for Wednesday.
Happy Thursday!

Hi everyone,
We are having a lab coat problem, particularly related to borrowing other people's lab coats. Currently, two users lab coats are missing, and two other users have had their sizes swapped without realizing.
Please remember - If you are going to be using someone's labcoat, put it back where you found it and most importantly - ask first. Please don't take other people's PPE without their consent or their knowledge as this causes delays in their schedule and pauses their work.
I had previously placed two visitor lab coats in two different sizes for people, those are gone now. I will wash a load of lab coats now, and I will place two new coats for lab visitors. Please use them if you are doing lab work for a short amount of time. If those are in use and you need to borrow someone's lab coat - ask them first please.
If you have any questions or anything you wanna raise on the topic, just drop me an email.
Thanks guys!
Sofiya

Hi everyone,
The plastic-free folders finally arrived today so it's time to start using the LEV Logs. I have organised the binders so the fume cupboard numbering is in order (starting from 1 continuing until 4). All you have to do as users is simply find the correct log you are using, and sign it. There should be information on the log itself for what each column means, what to know and what to sign, but I understand it can seem overwhelming at first - if you have any questions on them or if you want me to give you a rundown of the information, just let me know and we can either meet in the lab or in my office to go through it. Don't worry about asking questions.
I will place these in the lab this afternoon. So far there are 2 - the blue is for the general clean lab, and the pink is for the ultra clean lab. Please do not swap them around, the correct logs need to be in the correct rooms.
Remember - you sign the log when you are using the fume cupboard to confirm it is safe to use. If you are worried it's not, please let myself, Sophie, Ed or Lindsey know, and we will be able to have a look. You do not have to sign it every single time you use the same cupboard, just first thing in the day when you start your work. If you swap to a different cupboard, please sign it again.
I understand this will take some time to get used to, don't worry if you make a mistake or sign the wrong log, it will happen! If you let me know, then I will be able to correct it or we can correct the info together. Just remember to sign.
Thanks again guys, let me know if you have any questions!
Many thanks,
Sofiya
PS - Last week I placed 3 new golden (special) pens in the general clean lab. They are all gone now and only the not-working ones remain. Don't hoard the pens. Put them back in their spot once they've been used. They are good pens. Please don't lose them. People today have asked me to bring new ones even though less than a week ago I brought new ones. Just put them back in their spot so everyone can use them when you've done.
